The Challenge
We live in an age where we trade privacy for convenience. Internet companies rely on collecting user data to make profits, while the data collecting process and the generated data profiles are off the control of users. What can we do to change the situation?
The Solution
Alora is a Google Chrome extension that endows users with personal data management and data tracking transparency.
User Research
Survey

45% of the respondents said that they cleaned web history once several months
Semi-structured Interview
9 interviewees
“I would appreciate transparency over privacy way more - what data is being tracked and who it is shared with.”
Speed Dating
15 participants
Keyword searching in Chrome history has substituted the need for history categorization.
Persona
We are targeting tech savvy users who have high privacy consiciousness. This user group, based on our research, is more likely to take active actions to protect their private data.
Competitive Analysis
We investigated two popular track-blockers in the market, Privacy Badger and Ghostery. Both of them have thousands of users, but have prominent UX and UI issues.
Privacy Badger: Lack of explanation among trackers, cookies, and normal mode. Uninformative tooltips and naming.
Design Iterations
Through multiple rounds of interations and A/B testings, we kept improving the clarity and the usability of Alora based on user feedback.
+ Tooltips explaining cookies and trackers are helpful and educative
+ Showing status gives the users a sense of mental security and accomplishment
